A four-member Trinamul delegation, led by the party’s national spokesperson Derek O’Brien, met the full bench of the commission in New Delhi on Monday and urged the poll panel to promptly restrain central agencies such as the ED, CBI, income tax and the NIA from initiating any action against candidates, leaders, and workers of the party till the conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier on Friday, the party had submitted a memorandum at the office of the EC in Delhi alleging that the Centre was using central agencies to disrupt the party’s campaign process.

The panel met the EC a day after chief minister Mamata Banerjee raised her voice against the proactive role of the central agencies. “There is nothing to fear. If you get a letter from the ED or the CBI, respond saying – ‘I am currently occupied with the elections. We will meet after the elections,” Banerjee said from a meeting in Nadia on Sunday.

Demanding a level playing field for all political parties, Trinamul Rajya Sabha member Dola Sen said: “At the INDIA bloc rally yesterday, every Opposition party unanimously agreed and passed a resolution highlighting the unprecedented and biased actions by central agencies. We have observed a notable increase in the activities of central agencies. All of this is being orchestrated by the ruling party.”

The BJP also approached the Chief Electoral Officer on Monday demanding a level-playing field for all the parties in the state. BJP leader Sisir Bajoria and the party’s Jadavpur candidate, Anirban Ganguly, met CEO Aariz Aftab and accused the ruling party of not only divulging confidential government information but also manipulating the administration to monopolise locations for political advertising hoardings.

The complaint comes after the Trinamul Congress targeted the BJP’s Bashirhat candidate, Rekha Patra, claiming that she had benefited from the state government’s health insurance project, Swasthya Sathi. Additionally, Patra lodged a complaint with the National Women’s Commission against the Trinamul’s IT cell chief and the party’s candidate from the Tamluk constituency, Debangshu Bhattacharya accusing him of violating her dignity and disclosing her personal details on social media.

The BJP has also complained that they are not being given equal opportunities. The BJP in their complaint to the CEO wrote that the number of hoardings belonging to a political party is disproportionately high in the city.
