Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in Jalpaiguri on Sunday, accused Mamata Banerjee’s party of acting against the Constitution and the law while referring to Saturday's attack on the NIA team in East Midnapore.

“In Bengal, Trinamul is trying to trample on the Indian Constitution and the laws of the land to save criminals, the corrupt and the extortionists. They are regularly attacking the central agencies. The entire nation is aware about Sandeshkhali (where an ED team was attacked in January). Women had to face atrocities.... The situation has reached such an extent that the court has to intervene in most cases,” Modi said at a public meeting in Dhupguri block of Jalpaiguri.

In the span of a week, this is the second visit of the prime minister in north Bengal, after his April 4 meeting in Cooch Behar. On Sunday, he held the meeting to canvass for Jayanta Roy, the BJP candidate for Jalpaiguri.

“Across Bengal, ‘syndicate raj’ patronised by Trinamul is prevalent these days. People are forced to bear the torture meted out to them by the party. Let me say that it is Modi’s guarantee that such perpetrators and corrupt people will be brought to the book,” he said, underscoring the "corruption" in the recruitment of teachers and the public distribution system in Bengal.

Over the past few days, chief minister Mamata Banerjee has been constantly attacking the Centre through her speeches by referring to the frozen funds of central schemes, including the housing scheme.

Modi on Sunday countered Mamata's charge. “The central government has provided Rs 30,000 crore for construction of houses. We want the fund to flow straight into the bank accounts of beneficiaries but Trinamul wants the money to be transferred to the bank accounts of their corrupt leaders. We will not let Trinamul loot the money meant for the welfare of poor people,” he said.

He alleged that Trinamul was hindering the implementation of central schemes in Bengal.

“Whichever scheme we try to implement in Bengal, Trinamul puts the brakes on it. Such attempts, however, will not stop us...,” Modi said, elaborating on the infrastructure projects taken up by the Centre in north Bengal.

“We want this region to develop into an international tourist destination. Also, we will work to bring in industrial investments here for the creation of jobs,” he said.
