My stand on INDI Alliance proven right: Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee

Although Trinamool did not contest the election in an alliance with any of the INDIA constituents in Bengal — following the collapse of the seat-sharing talks with the Congress, which later tied up with the Left — she made it clear that the next phase of negotiations would not be impacted because of the past

Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday congratulated most of the INDIA constituents on their performance in the Lok Sabha polls and promised all possible help to strengthen the fledgling alliance, which fought against the “BJP’s atrocities” and “performed so well.”

“Even after the BJP’s atrocities, INDIA got so many seats…. If he (Narendra Modi) had not been in power, his party would not have got so many seats,” said the Bengal chief minister during a news conference on Tuesday evening.

“Had he come back to power, there would not have been any more elections in the country. I thank the people of the country for this mandate.... And I also request other parties not to support Modi,” she added.

Although Trinamool did not contest the election in an alliance with any of the INDIA constituents in Bengal — following the collapse of the seat-sharing talks with the Congress, which later tied up with the Left — she made it clear that the next phase of negotiations would not be impacted because of the past.

“I had said (to Congress) please take two seats.… I had also suggested that you adjust seats with other INDIA players and that would increase the Opposition tally, but they didn’t listen. I am proven right today,” the Trinamool chairperson said.

“But that would not affect the relationship with the Congress in Delhi,” said Mamata, who did not hide her joy with the defeat of state Congress president Adhir Chowdhury from Baharampore.

Chowdhury’s relentless attacks on Mamata are believed to be one of the reasons behind the end of the road for INDIA in Bengal.

After the election results, Mamata tried to send out a message that she was very much in touch with the bloc constituents.

“I congratulated Akhilesh (Yadav of the SP). The Bihar result is not true, which I learnt after speaking to Tejaswi (Yadav of the RJD). I got in touch with Uddahv (Thackeray of UBT Shive Sena).... I also spoke to the wives of Arvind Kejriwal and Hemant Soren (both in jail),” the chief minister said.

“I have sent congratulatory messages to Sonia-ji and Rahul,” Mamata added, indicating that she was communicating with the other INDIA constituents to plot to prevent the possibility of Modi’s return as the Prime Minister for the third time in a row.

With the BJP falling short of the halfway mark, the national capital witnessed hectic political activities in the INDIA camp, which is scheduled to hold a strategy session on Wednesday.

Mamata said that though she did not get any invite to attend the meeting, it didn’t matter much to her. “I have so many things to look after here.... Abhishek (Banerjee) will go and attend the meeting. I am telling him to speak to all INDIA bloc constituents separately,” she said.

The fact that she was keen to be part of the developments in the national capital was clear in her replies to questions on Trinamool’s probable role in the post-election scenario wherein the BJP is trying to woo allies to form the next government.

“I want to invite all others (including NDA allies like the TDP) to come to INDIA... Please don’t support the BJP for money. Let’s all unite and save the country and save our constitution,” said Mamata.

During the hour-long news conference, Mamata repeatedly went after the BJP, especially Modi, and demanded his resignation at least twice.

“Your magic is gone... You have lost yourself and your credibility and that’s why we want you to resign,” she said.

Amid murmurs in the political circles that a section of the BJP may ask for a change of guard at the top, Mamata tried to create further divisions in the BJP.

“Give others opportunity as there are some good people in the BJP.... I know that there are some good people in the RSS, too,” said the chief minister of Bengal.
