Trinamool chairperson Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday purportedly brought back Birbhum zilla parishad chief Sheikh Kajal to the party's organisational core committee, three months after he was removed from it by her.

Mamata, during a meeting with Birbhum leaders at her Kalighat residence on January 23, removed Kajal from the core committee, following differences between the young Trinamool leader and a few from the party's old guard.

A source said that Mamata, on the sidelines of her campaign rally in Birbhum's Hansan, instructed other members of the core committee to reinclude Kajal as soon as possible.

"This is a very significant development in poll season. It was believed Kajal was unhappy since his removal from the core committee in January. Kajal's exclusion resulted in a fresh rift in the party's organisation. Kajal's re-inclusion will be a damage control measure," said a senior Trinamool leader.

Kajal is a known rival of Trinamool district chief Anubrata Mondal, arrested by the CBI, along with daughter Sukanya, over an alleged cattle-smuggling scam.

On Tuesday, Mamata said they would be released from jail soon. "They (the BJP) confined Keshto (Anubrata's nickname) and his daughter so he can't work in the polls. They will be released after elections," she said.
