Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused the Election Commission of giving undue advantage to the BJP by turning a blind eye to the alleged hate speeches of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders of the party.

“The model code of conduct has been turned into Modi Code of Conduct,” Mamata told an election rally at Para in Purulia while accusing some EC officials of working at the behest of the BJP.

Addressing a gathering in support of Purulia’s Trinamool Congress candidate Shantiram Mahato, she said minorities were being attacked when they were heading to polling stations.

“I have received information that a person was beaten up when he went to cast his vote.... Do you think that the EC will take action?” asked the chief minister.

Asserting that people across the country would vote against Modi to ensure his exit this time, the Trinamool chairperson said if five persons were prevented from exercising their right to franchise, several others would vote to ensure the fall of the “tyrant” BJP government.

“Do you think that if five persons are not allowed to cast their vote, Modi will win? No. There are other five lakh.... five crore people who would vote against Modi this time,” Mamata said.

“You cannot win by unleashing terror,” Mamata said and attacked Modi as a tyrant and oppressive ruler who refused to pay the wages of the people who toiled hard under the 100-day job scheme.

She also slammed the Centre for not giving funds to Bengal under central schemes to build roads and houses.

Speaking to a packed ground, Mamata said the EC was remaining silent even though BJP leaders were peddling hate speeches to intimidate “lower caste Hindus and minorities”.
