Campaigning for the seventh and final phase of Lok Sabha poll concluded on Thursday, with all parties and their candidates trying their best to woo voters. Delegations of the BJP and the CPM also met the CEO chief electoral officer Aariz Aftab with their separate sets of demands. The BJP delegation led by leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari demanded that only permanent government employees should be given poll-related duties. The Telegraph gives a round-up of the day.
Colour of confidence
Constituency: Diamond Harbour
Place: Falta
Trinamool candidate Abhishek Banerjee noticed some youths playing with green abir. Abhishek called the youths and asked them to save the stock as it would be required to celebrate Trinamool’s victory on June 4.
Slogan war
Constituency: Dum Dum
Place: Salt Lake
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was leading a huge rally in Salt Lake on Thursday afternoon in support of party candidate Silbhadra Datta when a motley group of local Trinamool supporters on the opposite lane raised slogans in support of Saugata Roy. As TMC rallyists shouted “Joy Bangla”, the BJP ones countered it with “Chor, chor” slogan.
Cha and adda
Constituency: Jadavpur
Place: Baruipur
CPM candidate Srijan Bhattacharya was seen chatting with local people over
a cuppa at a tea stall in Baruipur. While Srijan was busy in his adda with comrades, several kilometres away Trinamool chairperson Mamata Banerjee was walking in a rally seeking votes for his rival Saayoni Ghosh. Asked how he could be so relaxed, the CPM’s young turk said: “Those who study in right earnest don’t need to panic the day before exam. It matters little to me if anyone walked 12km today.... I have also walked and found the entire Jadavpur walking with me.”
‘Sweet’ warning
Constituency: Dum Dum
Place: Baranagar
BJP Baranagar bypoll candidate Sajal Ghosh lost his cool when some party supporters alleged that Trinamool was unleashing chaos in the constituency. Seeking votes for himself and party’s Dum Dum nominee Silbhadra Dutta, Ghosh reminded many of Trinamul’s jailed strongman Anubrata Mondal when he warned rivals in veiled terms, saying any attempt to stop people from voting will be treated with “gur batasa (jaggery and sugar candy)”.
