Jostle for Telangana board posts after Lok Sabha elections

Though chief minister A. Revanth Reddy had finalised the first set of 37 names of party leaders to head the state bodies in February, none of them could take charge because of the model code of conduct that kicked in on March 16

More than 10 days after the Lok Sabha elections got over in Telangana, the state Congress establishment has been buzzing with activities because of the much-anticipated appointment of heads to several state-run boards and corporations.

Though chief minister A. Revanth Reddy had finalised the first set of 37 names of party leaders to head the state bodies in February, none of them could take charge because of the model code of conduct that kicked in on March 16.

Another reason why several new appointees chose to wait was “disgruntlement”, as they didn’t “like” the government bodies they were asked to head.

Other Congress leaders are jostling for positions with the chief minister, who also heads the state party unit. He is expected to announce 40 more names to head the remaining state-run bodies once the code of conduct is lifted after the June 4 results.

The chief minister is expected to give considerable weightage to youths and experience in the appointments that would mollify leaders denied tickets for the November-December 2023 state elections and the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls.

One such young Congress leader, who played a significant role during the campaigning for the last Assembly elections but remained aloof during the Lok Sabha polls, said only a miracle could get him a decent post.

“Youths like me worked very hard for years to ensure we win the Assembly elections against all odds. But the party failed to recognise our efforts. I would request the chief minister to recognise the contributions of the young leaders. I am a lawyer who can return to the courts anytime but there are others who sacrificed their youth for the party,” he said.

He added that several disgruntled leaders would head to Delhi to meet All India Congress Committee leaders such as general secretary K.C. Venugopal and possibly party president Mallikarjun Kharge to apprise them of the issues in Telangana. Some leaders who were included in the list of 37 are also expected to travel to Delhi to bargain with AICC leaders for better positions or boards to head.

However, there are Congress leaders who want the chief minister to wait and see how many Opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) legislators would cross over to the party. The defectors would expect to be rewarded with positions in some important state boards.

The Congress had won 64 of the 119 seats in the November-December state polls, while Congress ally CPI added one seat to the tally. The BRS came second with 39 seats. The BJP won eight and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen won seven seats.
