AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday announced a list of 10 guarantees he would ensure the INDIA bloc implements if elected to power.
Out on bail in a corruption case, the Delhi chief minister, however, said he had not discussed the guarantees with his allies.
When Kejriwal was behind bars awaiting trial in the excise policy case, his wife Sunita, during an INDIA bloc rally in Delhi in March, had read out six guarantees with a caveat that these had not been discussed with the allies as her husband was in prison. The guarantees announced on Sunday included the six Sunita had announced earlier.
On whether he was a contender for the Prime Minister's post if the INDIA bloc came to power, he replied to a reporter waving his arms in dismissal. Kejriwal said: “Na, main PM pad mein… (No, PM post). But whichever government comes, I will make them implement these. Trust me.”
The 10 guarantees include 24x7 electricity with free supply to the poor, improving government schools, clinics in every village and neighbourhood and upgrading district hospitals to multi-specialities, retrieval of Indian territory occupied by China, discontinuation of the Agnipath scheme, minimum support price on all crops at 50 per cent profit, statehood for Delhi, two crore new jobs, ending corruption, and simplification of the goods and services tax.
On evicting Chinese troops from India, he said: “Various efforts will be made at the diplomatic level and the army will be given absolute freedom to take whatever steps it deems necessary. The army would no longer be restricted.”
He added: “We have seen the result of Modiji's guarantee. His guarantee is not trustworthy and now Modiji will retire next year, so who will fulfil his guarantee after retirement? There is no answer to this either. Whereas Kejriwal is here, he is not going anywhere."
Kejriwal conceded that as the elections had begun, it was late to issue the guarantees. "This delay has happened because of my arrest. However, four phases of the elections are still left. Though these guarantees are being issued in the name of Kejriwal's guarantees, I have not yet discussed these with my other colleagues in the INDIA alliance. But I believe that no member of the alliance will have any problem with my guarantees,” he said.
Trinamool Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien said Kejriwal's guarantees were similar to what the other allies believe in. "Kejriwal spoke about 10 guarantees. The heart of the TMC manifesto is 10 oaths. The Congress has a Nyay Patra resting on 10 pillars. The vision is largely similar.... What the people of India have agreed upon is that none of Modi's guarantees work," he said.
