A delegation of Loktantra Bachao Campaign (a collective of right and social activists claiming to espouse the cause of democracy) on Monday lodged a complaint with the Jharkhand chief electoral officer (CEO) against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “giving hate speeches” during the election rallies in the state.

The delegation, which comprised development economist Jean Dreze, tribal right activist Elina Horo, Siraj Dutta and Tom Kavala, in a communique claimed to lodge a complaint against Modi “for violating the model code of conduct and the Representation of the People (RP) Act” in recent speeches in Jharkhand.

“Even though the complaint documented all the instances of inflammatory and communal comments made by Modi and also the specific sections of the MCC and RP Act that were violated, the CEO showed no sign that he might act on this complaint,” the communique alleged.

The communique claimed that while addressing election rallies in Chaibasa (Singhbhum Lok Sabha seat), Palamu (Palamu Lok Sabha seat) and Gumla (Lohardaga seat) between May 3 and 4, “the Prime Minister and BJP star campaigner Modi misled the public with fabricated facts to the effect that the Congress party was planning to rob Adivasis and other communities of their property and give it to Muslims, using derogatory terms such as ‘infiltrators’ and ‘vote jihad’”.
