Arun Mondal, the president of the BJP’s Siliguri (organisational) district, said: “Yesterday, a group of Trinamool Congress supporters attacked our workers. At least 10 BJP workers were injured. That is why we observed the strike today.”

Mondal, sources said, has also filed a complaint at Matigara police station.

On Monday morning, BJP workers assembled at several locations in Matigara block and staged a blockade on NH10 for around 15 minutes, bringing traffic to a halt for some time. Police acted quickly and cleared the road.

Blockades were raised on some other roads in Matigara for 15-20 minutes.

Some shops at markets were closed during the strike period.

Later in the day, a delegation of BJP leaders led by Nantu Pal and Hemant Gautam, both vice-presidents in the district, reached the office of the commissioner of police and submitted a memorandum.

“The police should take immediate steps to stop such attacks. The elections are just over and we don’t want any breach of law and order,” said Pal.

Trinamool has denied the charge.

Vedabrata Dutta, a spokesperson for the party in the Darjeeling (plains) district, said the BJP was trying to politicise the incident.

“It was a clash between two groups over some personal issues. The BJP is trying to politicise it. None from our party was involved in it,” said Dutta.

Police sources said they were probing the attack. Two persons have been arrested, the sources said.
