Barely a day after the Lok Sabha election results, multiple allegations of post-poll violence started to pour in from across the state, involving Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress and Opposition BJP.

In Cooch Behar, where then BJP MP and junior Union home minister Nisith Pramanik lost to Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia of the TMC, allegations have surfaced that a local ruling party leader, Rezzak Hossain, was attacked with a sharp weapon in Dhowaguri gram panchayat in Tufanganj. Hossain was also shot at, but survived and is now hospitalised. A video of a BJP leader brandishing a gun has gone viral.

Basunia said three of his supporters suffered injuries and were hospitalised. The BJP denied the allegation.

In Canning, BJP leader Mamoni Das’s house was attacked, and she was beaten up allegedly by TMC goons on Tuesday night. Her husband and mother were injured in trying to protect her. The incident occurred in Katpol under Dighirpar panchayat, Canning police station limits.

“They attacked us with weapons after 9pm. They had firearms,” Mamoni said. Canning West MLA Paresh Ram Das denied charges against Trinamool.

CPM’s Srijan Bhattacharya, who lost to Sayani Ghosh in the Lok Sabha polls, alleged that party workers were being threatened continuously.

“I’m getting distress calls from many CPM workers. I am coordinating with the police for protection. They (Trinamool) are unleashing a reign of terror,” he said.

In Durgapur, the tailoring shop of a CPM worker, who had worked as a polling agent, was allegedly torched by suspected Trinamool supporters at Mahuabagan. “My sister had taken a bank loan to buy four sewing machines for our survival. But they set my shop on fire that gutted everything,” Feroz Seikh, who runs the shop, said.

TMC district vice-president Uttam Mukhopadhyay said: “I don’t believe any one from Trinamool was involved. I will send a party team to see what happened.”

In Baranagar’s Kutighat, a CPM party office was allegedly vandalised by TMC workers.

“The TMC goons came and vandalised everything they could lay their hands on,” a local CPM leader said.

In Barrackpore, armed criminals attacked the home of BJP activist Babu Nag
with stones and bottles on Tuesday night. Nag blamed Trinamool.

“TMC goons are on rampage in across Barrackpore, trying to take revenge. But one should remember this is not the last election,” BJP candidate Arjun Singh who lost to TMC’s Partha Bhowmik in Barrackpore said.

Houses of BJP supporters were reportedly vandalised in Madhyamgram, Canning, Baruipur, and Patrasayer and Moina in Bankura.

A senior BJP leader stated that at least 40 families were given shelter at the district BJP office in Baruipur under the Jadavpur constituency.

The Election Commission ordered 400 companies of central forces to stay in the state until June 19.
