Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday picked up “10 years’ trailer” — a term coined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the general election campaign — and underscored the unprecedented hike in prices of essential commodities, including LPG.

“During the 10 years’ trailer, you have seen how prices of various commodities, ranging from LPG to garlic to petroleum fuels, have skyrocketed. Do you want to see the entire film or want a change?” asked Abhishek, while addressing a public meeting in Cooch Behar.

In the course of his campaign, Modi, who was also in north Bengal on Tuesday, claimed that he would continue to work for development in the next five years while iterating the performance of his 10-year-long tenure was “just a trailer”.

The Diamond Harbour MP sought to prove that the BJP had plans to stop Lakshmir Bhandar, the monthly financial assistance provided to women across the state by the Trinamool government. The scheme is being highlighted by Trinamool during the campaign, especially because from April, the assistance had increased.

He played a video clip showing a woman BJP leader of Cooch Behar and claimed that “BJP wants to stop Lakshmir Bhandar”.

“This woman leader of the BJP is saying that if the BJP secures 35 MP seats, they will stop Lakshmir Bhandar within three months. This proves the BJP’s anti-people stand. The lawmakers of the party whom you have elected, were instrumental in halting central funds meant for development,” said Abhishek.

He also countered Modi’s narrative of “guarantee” and termed it as a hollow promise. “You will have to decide whether you will believe in Modi’s guarantee which is an empty promise or the guarantee of Didi who has carried out extensive development in north Bengal and also extended a slew of benefits to people,” said the Diamond Harbour MP.

In Alipurduar, Abhishek held a road show in support of Prakash Chik Baraik, whom the party has fielded in the seat. Over 10,000 people congregated and walked in the march that covered a distance of around 2.5km.

“Unish Er Bodla, Unishe April” (Retribution of 2019 on April 19), said the Trinamul leader while urging people to give a “befitting reply to BJP whose MPs and MLAs didn’t do anything for the region.”

In Alipurduar, which has a Gorkha population, Abhishek raked the issue of conferment of ST status on 11 hill communities, a longstanding demand of the Gorkhas that the Centre has not met so far.
