Four Congress leaders in Assam quit the party on Saturday dealing another blow to the Opposition party ahead of the Lok Sabha polls next month.
The leaders, who resigned included Assam PCC general secretary Manash Borah, secretary Gauravv Somani, senior spokesperson Kishore Bhattacharya and Anuj Borkotoky, general secretary of the Charaideo District Congress Committee. Of them, Borah and Somani joined the BJP hours after quitting the party. Bhattacharya is likely to join them on Sunday.
Borah, who had contested the last Lok sabha polls on a Congress ticket, was present during the filing of the nomination of Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi from the Jorhat parliamentary seat early
this week.
Somani said the party leadership “struggled” to provide “meaningful solutions and initiatives that resonate with the masses”. He also stated that “persistent discord and internal conflict” among the leadership have “undermined the party’s credibility”. Manash Borah’s resignation letter expressed gratitude for the opportunities within the party and stated his desire to “explore new opportunities” for serving the people of his state.
Since January, two of the three PCC working presidents have quit their post of whom one (Rana Goswami) joined the BJP last week. At least six MLAs are under suspension.
