As t2 wandered in the gardens of Daga Nikunj, we soaked in the peace found solely in nature and history’s embrace in the personal home that was converted into a home for art, spirituality, performing arts and much more. Spread over 15,000sq ft, Daga Nikunj by Alka Jalan Foundation is a multi-disciplinary cultural venue and community gathering place. The magnificent building was earlier home to the Daga family where Alka Jalan grew up as a child. Post her parents’ death, she converted the exquisite building into a centre of peace that harboured the essence of performances, workshops and the community at large.

Daga Nikunj has been host to several notable events in Calcutta like the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet and Birju Maharaj’s performance. Located at 25/1, Ballygunge Circular Road, the place is open to host events with a capacity of 80-100 people with catering services.

The physiotherapy facility has cutting-edge laser technology that assists in the healing of orthopaedic and neurological pain. Sessions are held by Shivaji Bhattacharjee who also conducts pilates and yoga classes.

A firm believer in spirituality, Alka Jalan said: “I did not want this beautiful property to be unused and repurposing it into a community hub that has its homely and calming vibe intact, seemed like a really good option. Beginning from furniture to the staff around here, nothing has been changed. In fact, some staff members have been here since I was a child!”
