The Antarctic Bill was tabled in Lok Sabha. Scientific explorations in the continent did not begin until the 1930s. By late 1957, 12 countries had established over 60 stations on or near the Antarctic. Many countries started making territorial claims and for the sake of a stable environment for scientific activity, the Antarctic Treaty was drafted in 1959. India signed it in 1983. But this is not enough. Researchers are governed by laws of their home country, so there is a need for strong domestic legislation. Hence this bill. Alcoholism, illicit drug use, sexual harassment are common crimes in the Antarctica. In 2018, a researcher at Russia’s Bellinghausen Station on King George Island tried to murder his colleague.
