For the first time in 25 years, Russia loaded and sent to India a break bulk vessel of newsprint. The M/V LADA, arrived at Mumbai Port on June 5. Break bulk cargo consists of goods in unit loads such as boxes, cartons, crates, as opposed to bulk cargo, such as grains, coal, ore and cement. India’s newsprint sector has been impacted, first by the pandemic and then by the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Sixty-eight per cent of India’s annual demand of 2.2 million tonnes of newsprint is met by imports. Newsprint is mostly used to print newspapers and advertising material.

The top French court upheld the burkini swimwear ban in public pools of Grenoble, a city in southeastern France. The city council had voted for burkinis, but the government challenged this. The court said granting permission would mean allowing “one category of users to depart from the standard rule, enacted for reasons of hygiene and safety”.
