Calcutta designer Sharbari Datta, who passed away on September 17, changed menswear in India by restoring to it colours and embroidery with a flamboyance that had also disappeared. She covered men’s kurtas energetically with embroidery, something that would appear mainly along button holes in Bengali men’s punjabis. A Sharbari Datta kurta became a fashion statement.
Appreciative of others, friendly and humble, “Sharbaridi”, as she was known to all, will be missed by the fashion fraternity and beyond.
