Met Gala is back! Yesss, like for real, with an actual red carpet where celebs would be seen strutting down in newsmaking, Internet-breaking outfits for the much-awaited charity ball at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It was suspended last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Considered as the Oscars of the fashion industry, Met Gala this year will be kept a small, close-knit affair, keeping the ongoing pandemic in mind.
What’s the theme?
For the uninitiated, the Met Gala theme is very vital as celebs and designers put on their best, whacky or their interpretation of the theme for the evening for the fundraiser. This year, ‘American Independence’ is the dress code for the event.
What’s unique about this edition of Met Gala?
The Met Gala will be held in two stages, with a first reception on September 13 and another on May 2, 2022. “The 2021 Met Gala — The Costume Institute’s primary source of annual funding — will celebrate the upcoming two-part exhibition ‘In America’, focusing on the history of American fashion and honouring the 75th anniversary of The #CostumeInstitute. ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ opens to the public September 18; part two, ‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion’ will open on May 5, 2022” — read an post on The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Instagram page.
Who are the co-hosts of the biggest fashion night this year?
This year will see not one or two but four co-chairs — (picture above left to right) actor Timothée Chalamet, singer Billie Eilish, poet Amanda Gorman and tennis player Naomi Osaka, besides honorary chairs Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour. “Each of the Met’s four cohosts embodies the defining factor of American style: individualism. They may approach the concept differently, but their shared passion for expressing themselves through clothing connects with the exhibition’s theme” read Vogue’s official announcement.
A Throwback To Some Crazy Appearances At The Met Gala
Who can forget Sarah Jessica Parker’s elaborate Philip Treacy headgear that she wore in 2015? Some compared it to the fire emoji and some said she resembled Aku from Samurai Jack — the memes were endless.
Katy Perry have had many missed moments on the red carpet and honestly it was a tough call for us to choose between her 2018 massive larger-than-life winged outfit or her 2019 one where she turned up in a full-on chandelier costume! But wearing the 40pound chandeliers and looking like Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast has to surpass her other Met Gala appearances!
Pop queen Madonna’s 2016 outfit remains one of the most horrific outfits ever. The music icon was spotted wearing a cut-out black lace bodysuit with KT tapes wrapped around her body strategically. An out-of-place tiara, stacked finger rings and thigh-high black leather boots and body chains added to her terrible OOTN!
Outrageous doesn’t always have to be bad, at least when it’s at the Met Gala. Keeping that in mind, Rihanna’s 2017 outfit for the ‘Comme des Garcons’ theme was absolutely insane but it brilliantly stuck to the theme though.
If we had to give an award for the wildest accessory at the Met Gala in the last five years, it would undoubtedly go to Jared Leto! The actor held a replica of his own head on the red carpet in 2019 for the ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ theme.
