Washing your hands is one of the most effective ways to limit the spread of Covid -19 . A regular and thorough washing of your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser are essential.

But excessive hand-washing can make our hands extremely dry and even cracked. Soaps do not only remove dirt and germs from our skin, but also natural oils that keep our skin moisturised.

Here are a few things you can do to avoid dry and cracked hands despite all the washing and the sanitisers:

⦿ Right soap: Choose mild and less harsh handwash and use hand sanitisers only when you step out.

⦿ Pat dry: Instead of rubbing your hand with a towel, pat them dry, or leave them to dry naturally.

⦿ Moisturise: Moisturise immediately after washing. Moisturisers act as a protective layer to keep the moisture in.

⦿ Wear gloves: Washing dishes and clothes can expose your hands to water and chemicals for an extended period of time. Wear gloves while you are engaged in these activities.

⦿ Extra nourishment: You can massage your hands with coconut oil, which is ideal with its antibacterial properties. You can also use fresh aloe vera gel occasionally. Wash it after 15-30 minutes. You can apply hand cream or Vaseline at night before bed and use gloves to ensure that your skin soaks as much of these as possible.
