Green tea contains (EGCG), epigallocatechin gallate, which has many benefits for health, including on hair. EGCG is a type of catechin, a plant-based compound. EGCG and other related catechins act as antioxidants that may protect cells from the effect of free radicals.
Free radicals are the reactive particles formed in the body that can cause cellular damage when very high in number. Foods that are high on antioxidants like catechins may help to limit free radical damage.
EGCG may also reduce inflammation and prevent heart disease, diabetes and some cancers, research suggests.
EGCG exists naturally in several plant-based foods. It is also very good for the health of hair follicles and dermal papilla cells. This contributes to less hair loss and thinning, treats dandruff, scaly or flaky scalp and psoriasis. Green tea helps to maintain the right protein levels for the scalp while it also moisturises and nourishes.
- For the simplest haircare, just massage some freshly brewed, cooled cup of green tea into your scalp. Keep it on for 20 minutes. Rinse your hair well.
- Green tea can be used as an after-wash hair conditioner. After shampooing, let the final wash of your hair be with green tea.
- If you are in the mood, make a regular hair pack with green tea. Mix green tea with oilve oil or coconut oil. Add an egg yolk if you like. Keep the pack on for 20 minutes. Wash it off and shampoo your hair.
