In a reimagining of intimate but glamorous festive soirees where modern Indians dress in contemporary silhouettes as they clink their champagne flutes under the nippy, starry skies and embrace the warmth of Indian craft traditions, Good Earth’s Sustain launched its festive collection aptly called Raat Ki Rani.
Featuring kurtas inspired by Sindhi block prints, hand-block prints done in Ajrakhpur, zardozi on luxurious velvets and silks and malkha patchwork on silhouettes such as kalidar kurtas, salwars, doshalas, lehngas, jackets for men, the collection is a festive dreamscape keeping in line with Good Earth’s aesthetics.
Divided into four edits put into context of colour palettes and a distinct moodboard, Sustain’s festive collection oozes quiet glamour. “With every collection, we want to offer our wearers silhouettes that are inspired by traditional styles from across borders and reinterpreted for the modern woman and man,” says Anita Lal, founder and creative director, Good Earth. She decodes the collection for us.

Good Earth is known to delve deep into craft traditions of the subcontinent for their collections. Which kind of craft and clothing traditions have been tapped into for this collection?

Reminiscent of royal sartorial style, Raat Ki Rani features an amalgamation of traditional silhouettes, textiles and techniques that have been reinterpreted in contemporary ways. For example, the brand’s signature ajrakh block prints in natural dyes, intricate dabka embroideries and authentic zari work feature on fine handwoven and hand-spun fabrics and are a key highlight of the collection.

The collection features kurtas inspired by Sindhi block prints, which are found in Fustat, Egypt, meticulous hand-block prints by the Khatri family of Ajrakhpur, hand-done zardozi embroidery on luxurious velvets and silks and malkha patchwork and paisley-print jackets for the menswear collection.

Traditional feminine silhouettes like the kalidar kurtas, salwars, doshalas and lehngas are crafted in plush velvets, tissues and chanderi and detailed with bandhani work and Sindhi embroidery.

What is the mood board of and inspiration behind this collection?

Raat Ki Rani has been designed for the woman who revels in the quiet glamour of intimate gatherings. It is crafted for the time between twilight and dusk, when you shed your practical daywear and slip into something feminine, sensual and luxurious. Crafted for intimate festive evenings of quiet pleasure and togetherness, the collection features a charming festive colour palette of charcoal shades and rich jewel tones with intricate sequin and embroidery work for after-dark festive soirees.

As a part of Raat Ki Rani, we have an additional edit which we have just launched, called Ruh Fiza, featuring a softer colour palette of sufa, salmon and pale olive green with a hint of dusty and rani pink — for evening and daytime weddings.

Tell us a little about the different edits under this collection.

Each edit has a distinct look — in terms of the silhouettes, colour palette, fabrics and overall mood. While Shama features shades of charcoal detailed with jewel-like accents, Bano is a rich festive collection with our signature bestselling velvets in a slightly darker colour palette with exquisite embroidery, making it ideal for starlit celebrations and evening weddings or festivities.

Ruh Fiza features pretty pastels for daytime weddings and festivities with delicate sequins, hand-embroidery and metallic threadwork.

Sindhu is a celebration of the verdant abundance of the river Sindhu (Indus) itself, and the transfer of woven cloth, colours, dyes and patterns across these lands — creating looks that are firmly rooted in India but at once strongly global.
