Losing weight too fast can be bad for your health. Here’s why:
1. Nutrient lack
Losing weight at a rate more than 1 kg per week may mean not getting enough energy and nutrients to keep your body healthy. This can lead to fatigue, weakness
and brain fog.
2. Muscle burn
Lack of calories may begin to break down muscle (not fat) for energy because you’re not getting enough fuel from food. Loss of muscle is not good, especially if you’re trying to lose weight, because muscle burns more calories than fat, says Mayo Clinic. Muscle loss comes in the way of weight loss.
3. Metabolism slowdown
Losing a notable amount of muscle can make your metabolism more slow to try and conserve energy, says Mayo Clinic. Slow metabolism may not only make your weight plateau, but also cause fatigue, feeling cold and constipation.
4. Weight regain
A quick loss of weight may lead to weight regain. An extremely low-calorie diet leads to loss of more muscle and more post-diet weight regain.
5. Can cause gallstones
A daily diet of 800 calories or less can affect several parts of the body other than digestive system and muscles. It can increase the risk of gallstones, says Johns Hopkins Medicine. As the body metabolises fat during fast weight loss, it can cause the liver to form gallstones.
