Has Covid-19 made fashion go totally out of style? Not exactly

The year 2020, to put it mildly, hasn’t been a great year for fashion. Many would argue it is tone-deaf to talk trends when the world is facing its worst health crisis in a century. India’s biggest fashion season, Durga Puja-Diwali, has been low-key. The big fat Indian wedding has gone on a diet. High heels haven’t been out partying for months.

But has Covid-19 made fashion go totally out of style? Not exactly. While the virus has kicked fashion off its relentless treadmill, it’s also true that human vanity will outlive the novel coronavirus.

Glamour picks five fashion winners in the new normal:

Athleisure wear: It’s a no-brainer. With work from home becoming the norm, formals are giving mothballs company. Athleisure wear is sleek chic, comfortable, practical and fun. Take a 15-minute power nap between presentations if you dare, but no one will know.

Timeless classics: With outings still not the norm, fast fashion has been pushed into the slow lane. Less is more. Instead of buying a pile of clothes, people are willing to invest in classic formalwear that outlasts seasons, go for natural fabrics, check out the cut and craftsmanship.

Tops are topping: If only the face and top half of a person are visible on screen, it’s sensible to team up a formal shirt with a pair of shorts. Shirts, tops and necklines are getting a lot more attention nowadays. So are accessories like studs, chains and pendants.

Make-up: Do not write obituaries for the lipstick. The matte, kiss-proof lippie is thriving. A matte red lip creates magic when the mask is cast aside. And eye make-up never had it so good. Contouring, falsies drenched in mascara, smoky eyes, winged eyeliner, eye shadows of every hue, anything goes.

Masks: From the yellow, black and grey N95 to couture, masks have come a long way. From Louis Vuitton to Fendi to our very own Masaba Gupta, designers are coming up with masks. You get masks in a plethora of prints, in cotton and handloom silks, colour-coordinated with your OOTD. Who would have ever thought that MOTD or mask of the day would also be a thing!
