ILLUMINATING YELLOW AND ULTIMATE GRAY
After Pantone’s announcement of this pair of colours as the colour of the year 2021, from fashion weeks to celeb wardrobes, the colour dominated right from spring/summer to fall/winter collections. The trend had started way back in 2020 from runways to celeb appearances at award shows like the Golden Globe and the Brit Awards. Both classy gray and the bright, sunshiney and positive illuminating yellow made its way to showcases like Prada’s spring ’21 collection, Dolce & Gabbana ’21, Dior pre-fall ’21, Jacquemus’s spring/summer’21, Salvatore Ferragamo’s spring/summer’21. The pair symbolising positivity, hope and strength was embraced all through the despair of the pandemic situation last year.

The colour ‘green’ started trending on social media early last year and the fashion world was quick to incorporate it too. The nature-inspired hue, symbolising sustainability and reflecting a thought of “optimism” took designer collections and celeb wardrobes by storm. From spring/summer to autumn/winter, the colour featured in apparel and accessory collections of Bottega Veneta, Jacquemus and Salvatore Ferragamo to name a few. Various shades of green like lime green, the jewel tone of emerald green, dark green were on trend all year round. Early last year, Priyanka Chopra’s quirky polka-dotted orb dress from Halpern Studio’s s/s ’21 collection got much attention on social media and so did Cardi B’s eye-catching flower ensemble at Paris Fashion Week in October. From Met Gala to Insta, the colour clearly scored big on the trend report.

From accessories and apparel to make-up and hair, pink was undoubtedly the ‘it’ colour of the year 2021. Starting from Hollywood and Bollywood to Tollywood, Insta showed how it was a celeb favourite too. While the bold and bright hot pink was the most popular pick, shades like bubblegum, neon pink and orchid flower scored well too. The pastel pink shade, a wedding favourite for most Bolly brides, continued to remain a favourite last year too. The colour was not only spotted on runways, concerts and award shows but also as athleisure looks, occasion-wear and resort wear at vacays, a dash of pink was all one needed to brighten up and combat the gloom of the pandemic.
MARIGOLD
Warm yellow-orange shades like mango sorbet and marigold featured on the trends list starting with last year’s New York Fashion Week . It was prominently noticed in the Indian wedding trousseau lines as well as celebrity wardrobes like Deepika and Kylie Jenner.
PURPLE
Various shades from the purple palette like violet, plum, lavender were part of celeb wardrobes the year round. Be it Kate Middleton in Emilia Wickstead, visiting Northern Ireland, Lady Gaga’s House of Gucci premiere look or even Met Gala looks of Zoey Deutch and Whoopi Goldberg. Visible on the runway in Iris-Van-Herpen Fall’21 showcase too, the colour palette has been forecasted as a major trend of 2022.
BLUE
Shades of blue have been on the trend report since 2020 and predictably, will continue to remain popular this year too. From Met Gala looks of Amanda Gorman in Vera Wang and Chopard and Tracee Ellis Ross to runway showcase of fall ’21 and spring ’22 at Milan, Paris, New York, the colour featured in most designer lines. Bollywood celebs like Katrina, Deepika, Sara Ali Khan sported their blue looks last year on Insta too.
