Popular indie artiste Anuv Jain, who shot to fame with hits like Baarishein, Mishri and Gul, has dropped yet another soulful song — Mazaak. The Telegraph chatted with Anuv about his ninth single that he has penned and more.

What’s the story behind Mazaak? The title is fascinating.

Everything I have written so far are bits and pieces inspired by real experiences or my observations of other people’s lives. Mazaak is a song that I wrote in January and it talks about absurdities — how absurd it is that when you’re trying not to fall in love, the universe ends up making you fall in love. And once it happens, you hope it’s not ‘mazaak’; that it’s not a joke.

With this song I wanted to tell a story that’s simple yet complex in the way all verses connect with one another and associate with the word ‘mazaak’ . It encapsulates a simple love story about falling in love with a girl’s smile.

The video starts with a lot of mishaps — the misplaced gift, tea spilling, being locked out but in the end, he gets back the gift and gives it to the girl. What is the message that you — as an artiste — are trying to portray through the song?

The music video of the song documents a series of unfortunate events that follow a couple on their first date. The message that I wanted to communicate through this video is the feeling of how when we least expect to fall in love, it still manages to find us. Even though everything went wrong throughout the date, it’s like the universe conspires to bring the two together in the end.

The incidents in the music video are relatable. What was the idea behind the video?

With every song I put out, I have this rough concept in mind that I want to showcase in the music video for that song. For Mazaak, I knew I wanted to keep it simple and focus on the overall storytelling and so we worked on this concept of a “best-worst date” scenario. The idea was to capture all the emotions that a couple goes through on their first date and I’m so glad that the music video of the song turned out how I imagined it.

This song talks about falling in love. Is there anything brewing in your personal life because in your last interview to The Telegraph, you mentioned your songs are a slice of your life’s experience.

In all honesty, this song is a little too personal for me as it drops several subtle hints for the person I have written this for — and that’s all I want to say at this point, hah!

Your music acts like a connecting bridge among fans of varied age groups. What’s the secret behind its success?

I don’t think there is any secret; I just try to be as honest with my songwriting as possible. I am so glad to see the response to my songs in every show I do across cities. It just fills me with joy every time I see the crowd sing along to every word of my song with me.

Besides creating soulful indie music, what is keeping you hooked and inspired lately.

I have a couple of projects in the pipeline and once they’re ready, you’ll be the first to know.
