FLO (FICCI Ladies Organisation) Kolkata hosted an enriching panel discussion on February 22 at Daga Nikunj, on empowering women and women’s rights. The speakers were Justice Indira Banerjee, retired Justice of the Supreme Court of India; Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya, judge of the Calcutta High Court; and Supreme Court of India advocate Justice Priya Hingorani. Members learned about the challenges they faced as young legal scholars when they were met with opposition at the most basic levels but supported by champions who helped them push through. “Women empowerment is about giving women the right to choose,” explained Justice Banerjee. She, along with Justice Bhattacharya, discussed the need for women to be well-educated on their rights so they can make the best choices for themselves. Numerous rights exist for women in the Constitution, and knowing about these rights is the only way women can benefit from them. FLO Kolkata members also received advice on how to support and empower the less privileged among us to confront injustice and stand up for their rights. Shradha Saraf, FLO Kolkata chairperson, began and ended the session with a note on women’s empowerment. Women’s empowerment is a profoundly important process we must all actively engage in. FLO Kolkata’s Women Empowerment series of events is a step in that direction.
