Described as “challenging, stimulating, surprising, nourishing” by the judges, the list comprises youngest and oldest authors ever in the history to be nominated.

Leila Mottley 20, and Alan Garner, 87 are in the list of 13 writers who have made it to the longlist for this year’s edition.

The panel of judges includes cultural historian and writer MacGregor, academic and broadcaster Shahidha Bari; historian Helen Castor; author and critic M John Harrison; and novelist and poet Alain Mabanckou. The judges read a total of 169 submissions.

According to MacGregor the books are “exceptionally well written and carefully crafted” and “seem to us to exploit and expand what the language can do”.

Garner is longlisted for Treacle Walker.

Mottley, is the youngest writer to be longlisted - a record previously held by Jon McGregor who was 26 when his debut If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things made the list in 2002.

Mottley is one of six American authors in the list, with Hernan Diaz, Percival Everett, Karen Joy Fowler, Selby Wynn Schwartz and Elizabeth Strout.

NoViolet Bulawayo, who was born in Zimbabwe but lives in the US is part of the list too.
