Aspecial court in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi, 77, to three years of hard labour for committing fraud in the 2020 general elections. This brings up her prison sentence to 20 years in all. There are many more charges pending against her and, according to some reports, if convicted on all counts she could face 200 years in prison. The European Union, France and the US have condemned the latest sentence. Human rights activists say hard labour involves strenuous physical activity. Thirty years ago, Suu Kyi had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights.

Ahead of the Italian general elections, a candidate of the Brothers of Italy party, which is touted to win, was suspended for an old social media post praising Hitler. Though the party traces its links to Mussolini and has “neo fascist origins”, party leader Giorgio Meloni insists fascism is history.
