Chonde Barone Gaane, organised by Indira, had an impressive line of singers on the first evening held at Aban Mahal. Agnibha Bandyopadhyay’s powerful voice brought out the nuances in “Jagate anando jogye”. Jayati Chakraborty was intensely focussed in “Aaj sraboner purnimate” and her charisma was infectious.

Srovonti Basu Bandyopadhyay thrilled in the higher octaves but not so in the lower ones. She also lacked rhythm and emotional depth in “Purna chnader mayay”. Pratim Chakraborty’s “Bhorer bela kokhon” had bold moments and old-fashioned warmth. Sounding slightly off were the usually dependable Anindya Narayan Biswas and Srinanda Mullick. A crisp note of violin ushered in Pramita Mallick’s soulful “Asrubhara bedona”, which did not wallow in sadness.

Choral performances — “Kon puraton praner”, “Baishakher ei bhorer haowa” and “Modhyodiner bijon” — by the students of Indira were tinged with discomfiture. Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee and Srabanti Bhowmick joined the songs with their thoughtful and authoritative readings.
