The timing could not have been more right. Aditi Mohsin’s solo performance at Kala Mandir was brave, beautiful and affirming. Mohsin delved deep, exploring powerful lyrics in heart-tugging songs. Using energetic textures, layered with filigreed minimalism, the recital easily balanced rhythms and patterns without sounding cliché.

Beginning a tad slow with “Ratri eshe jethaye meshe”, Mohsin quickly picked up the pace with “Aaji bijon ghore” and “Sukhahin nishidin”. Her vocals gave “Tari amaar hotath” a mercurial spin and found the singer at her throaty best. Violin riffs ushered in “Tumi ki keboli chobi” with flamboyance.

The musicians, particularly the flautist and the percussionist, helped Mohsin comfortably perform “Je raate mor duarguli”. However, by the time she came to “Gram chara ooi”, Mohsin had begun to sound a bit weary. But being the seasoned performer that she is, she delivered more soulful numbers like “Dino shesher ranga mukul”. The evening was organised by Behala Sanskritik Sammilani.
