In Greek mythology, nymphs were used to anthropomorphise nature. They came in various forms and appeared everywhere, from the mountains to the streams to the trees. In Nymphs and Other Ethereal Images — a solo exhibition by Sibaprasad Karchaudhuri held at Gallery Charubasona recently — nymphs appear again and again, their forms amorphous and taking on the characteristics of their surroundings.
Karchaudhuri reiterates his affinity for abstract art, exploring the fundamental geometric forms and the dynamics of positive and negative space. Rich in colour and bold in the planer and linear constructions, his works are by no means an avant-gardist search for the pure form, cutting off everything that connects art with life or society. Details and textures created using different media — foil, gold and silver leaf — ensure that the places in his works are at the margins of recognition — familiar, yet elusive.
