What to expect: Starting a week ahead of Poila Baisakh or the Bengali New Year, the seven-day exhibition will celebrate the occasion by showcasing a variety of tant saris, one of the richest handwoven textiles of Bengal. The sustainable fashion store will bring the best of tant under one roof by displaying a variety of tant saris from various clusters well-known for its tant production. The exhibition will feature tant cluster of Fulia, Shantipur, Begampur, Dhonekhali, Labhpur, Saithia and Dhatrigram. As a brand that supports indigenous crafts and artisans, the exhibition will celebrate and support the local weavers and the local craft by displaying this six-yard, a staple for a Bengali woman’s wardrobe. Organiser speak: “Handloom weaving, a traditional livelihood of men and women for centuries, is a process that relies on the body, rhythm, and skill of the weavers depicting their lives’ narratives. The legendary finesse of handloom textiles derived from the specialised traditional knowledge and skills of the rural weavers have generated awe across the world for centuries. It is an elaborate and entirely handmade process that makes such textiles precious and exquisite. Deshaj was always involved in it for the last 15 years to revive the traditional tant designs to make them marketable. The exhibition will be inaugurated by veteran actress and craft enthusiast Sonali Bose and television actress Ananya Sengupta today evening,” said Sonali Chakraborty, co-founder of Deshaj.
