ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel will build the world’s single biggest steel manufacturing factory at Hazira in Gujarat by 2029, executive chairman Lakshmi Mittal said on Wednesday.

Mittal pointed out that at the core of ‘Atmanirbharta’ or self-reliance is steel which supports a range of applications across sectors such as infrastructure, urbanisation, renewables, automotive, including electric vehicles, defence, and railways.

“By bringing the best of global technology, we are developing high-end products which help steel consumers across MSMEs to start-ups to become competitive. Gujarat welcomed ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India four years ago, and in 2021, the Prime Minister and chief minister performed the Bhoomi Pujan of our Hazira expansion project. I am proud to say that this expansion project is progressing rapidly and according to the target, its Phase 1 will be completed by 2026’’, he said while addressing the gathering.

“When the entire project is completed in 2029, the Hazira site of AM/NS India will be one of the world’s largest single-location integrated steel plants with a total capacity of 24 million tonnes of crude steel production,” he added.

AM/NS India is a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. It was established in December 2019 after the acquisition of Essar Steel.

Mittal said with the support of the Gujarat government, the JV will be able to commission the full site in the next five years.
