Twitter is testing a widely requested edit button for the first time, a feature that will be rolled out to paid subscribers in the coming weeks, the microblogging site announced on Thursday, according to media reports.

The edit feature will soon be available to users who pay $4.99 per month for a subscription to Twitter Blue.

This comes after years of debate both internally and externally as to whether the “edit" feature was a good idea for a product known for making posts go viral.

Edit Tweet, as the feature will be called, will let users make changes to their tweet for up to 30 minutes after its originally published. Tweets that are edited will carry a label, and others on Twitter will be able to click on the label to see prior versions of the post.

The company is specifically testing the edit button with a small group of users in hopes of quickly resolving possible issues, the company wrote in a blog post. The edit button will then roll out to Twitter Blue users in the coming weeks.

The company’s post further notes, “edited tweets will appear with an icon, timestamp, and label so it’s clear to readers that the original tweet has been modified.” If a user taps on the label, they will be taken to the edit history of the tweet, “which includes past versions of the Tweet for context.”

Twitter says the ‘Edit Tweet’ feature will ensure users can fix typos, missed tags, etc in their tweets. It adds that the time limit and version history play an important role to add context when it comes to edited tweets. The history will also “help protect the integrity of the conversation”, according to Twitter. The idea is also to “create a publicly accessible record of what was said,” add the company.
