Electric vehicle sales have registered an annual growth of 38.3 per cent in the second quarter of the fiscal at 3.91 lakh from 2.82 lakhs, charged by three-wheelers even as two-wheeler sales fell.
The adoption of electric vehicles in the four-wheeler category is yet to see any significant traction, according to government data.
The total number of EVs sold in the four quarters from July to September, 2023, is 15.15 lakhs
Sales are dominated by two- and three-wheelers with a combined volume share of almost 93.7 per cent in the second quarter.
However, two-wheeler sales fell 19.8 per cent to 1.97 lakh units sold, while three-wheeler sales registered a growth of 28.6 per cent at 1.68 lakh units.
Sales of four-wheelers also fell and its share in total EV sales is 5.8 per cent.
EV sales were the highest in Uttar Pradesh in the second quarter, with sales of 76,652 units, comprising 19.6 per cent of the total. More than 80 per cent of the sales were in the three-wheeler category.
Two-wheeler sales are the maximum for Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, with a combined share of 59 per cent in India’s high-speed two-wheeler sales.
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Assam have the maximum sales in the three-wheeler category, with a share of 39.5 per cent, 13.2 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively.
Karnataka has the highest sales of four-wheelers with 3,429 units sold in the second quarter, followed by Maharashtra and Telangana with sales of 3,052 and 2,065 units, respectively.
Maharashtra has the highest e-bus sales, with 112 units sold in the second quarter.
Electric 4W sales
In October 2023, Tata Motors led the sales with 5,353 units registering a 25 per cent increase compared with September sales of 4,284 units.
Sales of MG Motors fell to 879 units from 884 units during the same period, while that of Mahindra and Mahindra fell to 263 units from 353 units.
Among the luxury OEMs, BMW India sold 83 units in October compared with 73 in September.
Mercedes sales dropped sharply to 33 units from 73 in September.
