Thomas Goode, which produced a dinner service for the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, has collaborated with Makaibari tea estate to come up with a limited-edition tea set, marking the coming together of arguably world’s best known Darjeeling tea brand with the esteemed British purveyor of fine tableware.
Inspired by Makaibari’s verdant tea gardens and adorned with 24-carat gold plating, the tea set comprising 21 pieces has been priced at ₹4,50,000. The collection went on sale after being formally launched at Makaibari Bungalow, the retail outlet of tea producer at Taj Bengal in Calcutta. There will be only 50 such sets going for sale and they will be progressively available in Mumbai and Delhi.
Rudra Chatterjee, MD of Luxmi Tea Group, the parent of Makaibari, said he wanted to offer a collection that truly captures the essence of both Indian and British tea culture.
“This collaboration beautifully marries the warmth and vibrancy of Indian chai time with the elegance and sophistication of a British high tea,” Chatterjee said at the launch in the Bungalow.
Reshma Bhagat, director of Thomas Goode, said the collaboration is a significant milestone. “We are thrilled to be collaborating with a brand that shares our passion for quality and tradition,” she said in a statement.
Thomas Goode was established in 1827 at London’s Mayfair district. As of 2018, the company was acquired by property entrepreneur Johnny Sandelson, who has since expanded the operations, including opening a store and museum in Mumbai. The company is also soon going to open a store in Delhi too.
