Reliance Jio is looking at ambitious growth in its broadband business with plans to connect at least 10 crore households through JioFiber and its fixed wireless access (FWA) offering, Air Fiber.
Air Fiber is its service that can offer broadband-like speeds through wireless connectivity, which Reliance Jio says will provide the same high speed and service of traditional broadband sans wires.
While the latest subscriber numbers on its home broadband business are not available, earlier reports had put it at around nine million.
It intends to ramp this up to 100 million, or 10 crore, a jump of 11 times.
This was disclosed by Kiran Thomas, president of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd , at an earnings call after Reliance declared results for the first quarter ended June 30, 2023, on Friday.
Thomas further disclosed that the company is also upgrading its Wi-Fi offering within homes to Wi-Fi 6 which will result in better indoor coverage. Another advantage of the standard is that it provides increased speed and access in places or homes with many connected devices.
He said JioFiber made up 80 per cent of all the new wired broadband subscribers in the country.
The numbers have come on the back of a superior product offering, apart from competitive and attractive tariff plans. This has led to a nearly 50 per cent year-on-year growth in its subscriber base.
While Thomas did not disclose when Jio will formally launch Air Fibre, details could be announced in the upcoming annual general meeting of Reliance.
