Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke wreaked havoc with the new ball as New Zealand bowled India out for an embarrassing 46 in only 31.2 overs on Thursday. 46 all out marks India’s lowest-ever total in 293 home Test matches.
This 46 all-out, which included five batters getting dismissed for ducks, was the first instance in which the team failed to cross the 50-run mark in a Test innings at home.
It was also the second time that five Indian batters failed to open their accounts against the Kiwis in a Test at home, after the Mohali Test 1999.
India’s previous lowest total at home was against West Indies in 1987, when the hosts were bowled for 75 in Delhi with seamer Patrick Patterson claiming a five-wicket haul.
India’s overall lowest was recorded four years ago against Australia when the Aussies bundled India out for 36 runs at Adelaide.
While India’s performance against neighbours put them atop of the World Test Championship table, India’s batting order continues to struggle against SENA countries. It also puts the men in blue’s preparations for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy under the scanner.
The Telegraph Online looks at India’s lowest team total in Test matches and finds that Indian batsmen struggle more when it comes to facing SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) pace bowlers.
36 vs Australia, 17 December 2020, Adelaide
India suffered the ignominy of recording their lowest Test team total during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in 2020-21.
India were bowled out for 36, their second sub-50 score in all Tests, in the second innings of the first test at Adelaide. Mayank Agarwal was India’s top scorer with 9 runs of 40 balls.
But the team made a resounding comeback in the second test at Brisbane to claim the series 2-1.
42 vs England, 20 June 1974, Lord’s
In India’s tour of England back in 1974, the second Test match at Lord’s saw the visitors fold for 42 in their 2nd innings after being asked to follow on.
England scored 629 in their first innings. India responded with 302 and 42 as the hosts won by an innings and 285 runs.
Eknath Solkar (18*) was India’s top scorer in the second innings.
46 vs New Zealand, 16 October 2024, Bengaluru
New Zealand pacers used the overcast conditions in Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium and stunned India on Thursday.
Kiwi pacers reduced India to 10/3 inside 10 overs and before lunch, they lost six wickets. India’s innings wrapped up after lunch. Pacers Matt Henry (5/15) and William O’Rourke (4/22) were exceptional.
Rishabh Pant was India’s top scorer with 20 runs.
58 vs Australia, 28 November 1947, Brisbane
In 1958, the Australia versus India first Test in Brisbane saw India getting packed for 58 runs in their first innings.
Australia declared their innings after scoring 382 for the loss of 8 wickets. India scored 98 in their first innings. Australia won the match by an innings and 226 runs.
Lala Amarnath (22) was India’s top scorer in their score of 58.
58 vs England, 17 July 1952, Manchester
In India’s tour of England back in 1952 the third Test match at Manchester saw the visitors get bundled for 58 runs in the first innings after being asked to bowl first.
England declared after scoring 347 runs at the loss of 9 wickets in their first innings. India responded with low scores of 58 and 82 as the hosts won by an innings and 207 runs.
Vijay Manjrekar (22) was India’s top scorer in the first innings.
66 vs South Africa, 26 Dec 1996, Durban
In 1996, the South Africa versus India 1st Test in Durban saw the visiting side getting bowled out for 66 runs in their second innings while chasing a target of 395 runs.
South Africa scored 235 in the first innings, while India managed to get to 100 runs. In the 2nd innings, South Africa scored 259 runs to put up a target of 395. The hosts won the match by 328 runs.
Former India head coach and captain Rahul Dravid was India’s top scorer with a total of 27 runs in 73 balls in the second innings.
