Bhavish Aggarwal, co-founder and CEO of Ola, is stepping away from his day-to-day operations to concentrate on engineering functions, team building and products.

Aggarwal, who had founded the ride hailing firm along with fellow IIT, Mumbai alumnus Ankit Bhati in 2010, disclosed this in an email to employees. He added that group chief financial officer G.R. Arun Kumar will now handle day-to-day operations across the group.

In a tweet, Aggarwal clarified that he is not retiring and that Arun Kumar will help him manage Ola’s operations. “We will accelerate ambitious new projects like our car, cell, gigafactory and deepen focus on tech and engineering,” he added.

The development comes at a time there have been quality issues reported in Ola electric scooters amid certain senior level exits at Ola Electric Mobility.

Recently, its S1 Pro electric scooter caught fire in Pune. There was also a report of one owner complaining of the electric scooter going abruptly in reverse. The two-wheelers are being rolled out from a factory in Tamil Nadu which Aggarwal calls the Ola Future Factory.

While Ola says it has a production capacity of 10 million powered by more than 3,000 robots, it has in the recent past not been able to meet the surging demand leading to delayed deliveries.
