Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday met Union home minister Amit Shah in Delhi and discussed several key issues, including restoration of statehood and clarity on the Transaction of Business Rules (TBR) in the Union Territory.

The Omar government had in its first cabinet meeting in October passed a resolution calling for restoration of statehood in its original form. The resolution, which was cleared by lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha, has authorised the chief minister to take up the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah.

In the absence of the TBR, there is confusion regarding governance as the bureaucrats are getting confused over dual power centres.

Sources said Omar discussed the TBR with Shah at length to seek clarity and get a clear sense of the powers of the elected government over various departments.

Shah on Thursday also chaired a high-level security review meeting to assess the situation in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of a spate of terror attacks in the region over the past few months.

Sufi saint text

Omar on Thursday promised to look into the lieutenant governor's administration’s decision to delete a chapter on revered Sufi saint Sheikh Noouuddin Wali from the Class IX English textbook following outrage over the move.

An English teacher at a government school told this newspaper on Tuesday that the change came at the start of the academic year this March but the issue has triggered a row only now.

The chapter was reportedly removed by the board of school education, which was helmed by the LG's administration.
