Maserati launches GranTurismo, Italian sports car maker betting big on Indian market

'It is a big market for us and has the potential to be among the top 10 global markets in the medium term. We are not looking at huge volumes as it is a luxury car... we can achieve 500 units a year in the medium term here', Philippe Claverol, head of overseas markets, said

Italian sports car maker Maserati has launched its GranTurismo with two variants — Modena and Trofeo — priced at 2.72 crore and 2.90 crore (ex-showroom) before customisation.

The car enters India two years after its launch in the international market.

The EV variant Folgore could be launched in 2025 depending on market conditions and customer demand.

The car will compete with the BMW M8 Competition (2.44 crore), the Ferrari Roma (3.76 crore) and the Aston Martin DB12 (4.59 crore).

Powering the Maserati GranTurismo is an F1-derived 3.0-litre V6 Nettuno Twin Turbo petrol engine. In the Modena trim, this unit pushes out 485 bhp and 600 Nm of peak torque whereas the Trofeo variant churns out 544 bhp and 650 Nm.

The former can sprint to 100 kmph from standstill in just 3.9 seconds while the latter achieves the same in 3.5 seconds. Both variants get an all-wheel drive layout as standard. The GranTurismo Trofeo can clock a top speed of 320 kmph.

Maserati has significantly modernised the GranTurismo’s cabin, replacing most traditional physical controls with advanced touchscreens. The dashboard now houses a 12.3-inch infotainment display alongside an 8.8-inch screen dedicated to climate control functions.

The multifunction steering wheel retains some physical buttons, offering a blend of tactile and digital controls, while a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster provides critical driving information. A standout feature is the iconic analogue clock on the dashboard, which has been updated to a customisable digital display, reflecting Maserati’s blend of tradition and innovation.

The low-slung look and flowing lines of the previous-gen Maserati GranTurismo are carried over into the latest variant.

A Maserati Trident logo adorns the front end, while the bumper has splitters and large vents. Vents behind the grille are one of the new improvements, directing excess air across the car’s body. Furthermore, the side profile retains the distinctive triple vent design found on Maserati cars.

Philippe Claverol, head of overseas markets, told The Telegraph that the car maker is betting big on the Indian market. “It is a big market for us and has the potential to be among the top 10 global markets in the medium term. We are not looking at huge volumes as it is a luxury car... we can achieve 500 units a year in the medium term here.”

Currently, North America, Italy, Switzerland, China, Japan, Australia, Taiwan and the UAE are the top global markets for Maserati and India with less than 50 units sold last year is still a small market, he added.

Maserati already has a dealership in Mumbai and opened a new one on Friday here in the national capital and will open one in Bengaluru later this year, Claverol said.

“We see that the North India market is bigger actually than the Mumbai market and we also think that Bengaluru is the third pillar. This dealership expansion is also because we want to go where the markets are in terms of volume,” he said.

On launching electric vehicles in India, Claverol said Maserati has the electric version of the conventional engine models under the Folgore range globally and the company will study the feasibility of bringing it in India.

“We will, with our partners, start to look at how is the market, how to train our people, how to train the technicians, how to analyse, how to build the right offer, the pricing, the charging solution, and so on, and then, once we will be ready, we will look at the pricing, and we will try to launch the Folgore range as well,” he said.
