Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) will launch two SUVs at the Delhi Auto Expo next month as the company aims to increase its market share in the segment to 30 per cent from 13 per cent.

India’s No. 1 car company will also showcase its electric SUV, Concept, Shashank Srivastava, senior executive director, marketing and sales of MSIL, said on Friday.

“We hope to be leaders in the SUV segment with the launches,” Srivastava said.

He refused to disclose the SUVs to be showcased at the expo to be held in Greater Noida from January 11. Srivastava said the new models will help to increase its overall market share to 50 per cent from 42 per cent.

According to sources, the company is due to launch the much awaited five-door Jimny that it showcased at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo and also probably a Baleno crossover. With the launch of the new Brezza and the Grand Vitara this year, Maruti has seen an increase in its market share in the SUV segment.

“Before we launched these two SUVs, in the month of June our market share was 4 per cent and and in July, 7 per cent. It was only after the launch of the new Brezza and the Grand Vitara that our market share grew to 13 per cent.”

He said the company has been constrained by the non-availability of vehicles because of the semiconductor shortage.

“But still our market share has steadily gone up. With the new Brezza and the Grand Vitara, the overall market share has gone up from 40.5 per cent to 42 per cent.”

The company will also showcase its flex-fuel technology at the Expo, having recently unveiled its Wagon-R flex fuel vehicle.

“We will be present in the Auto Expo in a big way. Our hall will be spread over 4,200 square metres and we hope to attract 600,000 plus visitors,” said Srivastava.

The industry expects to sell 275,000 vehicles in December as buyers try to beat impending the price hike in the new year that most of the Original Equipment Manufacturers have announced. It has also succeeded in depleting stock levels both among retailers and wholesale OEMs.

The passenger vehicle segment sales will stand at 4.1 million units at the end of FY23 up from 3.8 million units in FY22.
