Italian super sports car maker Lamborghini plans to treble its sales in 2019 on the back of the success of its five-seater SUV Urus. Last year, it sold 45 cars in India of the 5,500 units sold globally.

“India is a small but strategic market for us and we have invested here since 2012 to set up after-sales facilities,” Sharad Agarwal, head of Lamborghini India, said over the phone after the launch of Huracan Evo. The Huracan Evo is a facelift of the Huracan and retails at Rs 3.73 crore, ex-showroom.

Of the 45 units sold, less than 50 per cent are Lamborghini Urus, the five-seater sports utility vehicle that the luxury car maker launched in January 2017 at a price of Rs 3.11 crore.

“About 70 per cent of the Urus orders were from first-time Lamborghini buyers. And there were a lot of purchases from smaller cities such as Bhubaneswar, Calcutta, Kanpur, Lucknow, Indore, Hubli, Surat, Calicut, Cochin and Coimbatore,” said Agarwal.

The Urus deliveries began in September last year and this year, it will achieve the full potential of its sales.

Buoyed by the response to the Urus, Lamborghini hopes to treble its sales this year.

It aims to be the leader in the super-luxury segment of cars priced above Rs 2 crore, competing with the likes of Bentley, Ferrari and Rolls Royce.

Before the launch of the Urus, Lamborghini was present only in the super sports car segment, which comprises two-door cars with prices starting at Rs 2 crore. Despite 100 per cent duties, a 10 per cent surcharge and a 48 per cent GST on super sports cars that jack up prices by more than three times, Lamborghinis find takers in India.

“There are several factors that contribute to our sales, we have the right touchpoints, we offer the right experience and right after-sales,” said Agarwal.

“India was the first market where the Urus arrived after its global launch, as also the Aventador SVJ and the Huracan Evo,” added Agarwal.

Growth appetite

Agarwal predicted that in four to five years, India will be among the top 15 markets for Lamborghini. The Lamborghini line-up now includes the Huracan Evo, the Aventador and the Urus.

The Huracan Spyder is due for launch in India this year.
