K.S.B. Sanyal aka Shubi no more

He was recognised for his civic contributions by being appointed Sheriff of Calcutta in 1987

K.S.B. Sanyal (popularly known as Shubi) passed away in the early hours of Monday. He was the chairman and managing director of Andrew Yule and Company Ltd. and served as Sheriff of Calcutta in 1987.

Born in 1930 in undivided Punjab to S.N. Sanyal, who was an eminent educationist in Punjab and Nilima, the first woman to receive a masters degree from the Punjab University, he obtained a masters degree from the Punjab University and was later educated in the UK as a Commonwealth scholar.

He taught at university for a year prior to joining Burmah Shell in 1955 in Delhi. Sanyal joined Andrew YuleGroup as chief executive, Tidewater Oil Co (India) Ltd based in Calcutta in 1975.

During his tenure, the company grew significantly and in March 1983, he was appointed chairman of the group. During his leadership until March 1991, the company grew in profitability and doubled in size.

He was recognised for his civic contributions by being appointed Sheriff of Calcutta in 1987.

He also served as the president of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the president of Tollygunge Club in 1987.

He was on the boards of a number of companies including Enfield, Goodyear, ANZ Grindlays, IFGL Refractories, Philips Carbon Black, Woodlands Hospital and Haldia Petrochemicals.
