Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is all set to revive iconic motorcycle brands of yesteryear — Jawa, Yezdi and BSA — through a separate company, Classic Legends Private Ltd.
The Mahindra subsidiary on Thursday relaunched the iconic Czech motorcycle brand Jawa in India with two new models that were unveiled at Mehboob Studios in Mumbai.
Classic Legends, in which M&M has a 60 per cent stake, was launched two years ago to re-introduce iconic marquee motorcycle brands in the market.
Besides M&M, business analyst Anupam Thareja and Rustomjee Group chairman and managing director Boman Irani are the other stakeholders in Classic Legends.
Irani belongs to the family that owned Ideal Jawa, which manufactured the Jawa-Yezdi motorcycles in the sixties and seventies.
“It’s rare to get an opportunity to resurrect a legend. Jawa is an authentic and iconic brand that represents the desire and yearning in all of us for freedom and adventure,” Mahindra group chairman Anand Mahindra said at the launch.
Catering to the premium segment, the company introduced the Jawa and the Jawa Forty Two, both powered by 293cc liquid cooled single cylinder engines and priced at Rs 1.64 lakh and Rs 1.55 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), respectively.
A third model Perak, a bobber with a bigger engine, was also unveiled, which will be launched later next year. The price of Perak has been kept at Rs 1.89 lakh.
