IT bellwether Infosys has started operations from its campus at New Town in Calcutta.
“The department of IT&E is elated to inform that Infosys has started their operations in Calcutta from today in their newly built state-of-the-art facility in New Town…
“All departments of the government of West Bengal worked in sync to ensure we got all infrastructural work, including roads, lights, drainage etc. around the premises completed in a very short time,” said state IT minister Babul Supriyo on social media platform X.
“Under the leadership of our Honourable chief minister Mamata Banerjee, we remain committed to make Calcutta the next most happening IT hub in India,” the minister said while welcoming the company to the state.
The company took about 40,000 square feet of office space at Mani Casadona in Rajarhat to start its operations in the city.
According to sources, employees from that office have been shifted to the new campus, the first phase of which has now become operational.
The 50-acre campus could eventually have a capacity of around 3,000 IT professionals.
Back in August 2018, foundation stone of the software development centre was laid by the Bengal chief minister.
The company had said that it would invest around ₹100 crore in the first phase of the construction of the 525,000 square feet facility, with an employment potential of 1,000 engineers initially.
Infosys had acquired the 50-acre land during the erstwhile Left-Front regime.
While the IT major had initially sought special economic zone status, the Trinamool government has instead allowed the company the benefit of freehold provision, with a condition that at least 51 per cent of the land will be utilised for IT and ITeS in a bid to expedite the commission of the project.
