US chip maker Intel Corporation has announced the departure of Venkata Murthy Renduchintala, the firm’s chief engineering officer and group president of the Technology, Systems Architecture and Client Group (TSCG), as part of a restructuring move that splits the group into five teams.

This comes on the back of the Santa Clara-based company announcing a delay in transition to its next generation chips at its earnings call last week. In a statement issued on Monday, the company said the five teams will be divvying up responsibilities in technology development, manufacturing, design engineering, architecture, software and graphics and supply chain management.

Each of the groups will directly report to chief executive officer Bob Swan.

Intel is a major player in the PC market with its processors and chipsets. But over the past few years it has been struggling to show big improvements in performance. It has also delayed the development and introduction of next generation chipsets which according to observers has affected the development of the computer industry.

Apple, which is a major customer of Intel, last month announced its plans to develop its own processor for its Mac range of computers. Apple had also announced the purchase of Intel’s smartphone modem business for $1 billion last year along with the transfer of 2,200 employees, intellectual property, equipment and leases.

Ann Kelleher, an Intel veteran, will now lead the development of 7-nanometer and 5-nanometer chip technology process. The 7nm chips are six months behind schedule and the company may have to rely on outside support as a contingency option.

I also want to thank Murthy for his leadership in helping Intel transform our technology platform,” said Swan. Renduchintala was roped in by Intel from Qualcomm in 2015 and put in charge of the group.
