India’s total foodgrain production in 2023-24 is estimated to be 328.85 million tonnes, marginally lower than the previous year’s record of 329.69 million tonnes, according to the third advance estimates released by the ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare.
However, this figure remains higher than the average production of the past five years (307.75 million tonnes).
Despite the slight dip in overall foodgrain production, wheat output reached a historic high of 112.92 million tonnes in 2023-24. This surpasses the previous record of 110.55 million tonnes set in 2022-23. The government has already procured over 26 million tonnes of wheat at the minimum support price (MSP).
Rice production is estimated at 136.7 million tonnes for 2023-24, reflecting a slight increase from 135.75 million tonnes in the previous year.
Production of tur (pigeon pea) and lentil (masoor) also witnessed growth, with estimates reaching 3.38 million tonnes and 1.75 million tonnes, respectively. Similarly, soybean and rapeseed and mustard production are estimated at 13.05 million tonnes and 13.16 million tonnes, indicating a continued rise in oilseed production.
Cotton output is estimated at 32.52 million bales (of 170 kg each) and sugarcane production is pegged at 442.52 million tonnes for the 2023-24 crop year, reflecting stable production levels for these cash crops.
