Several customers of ICICI Bank on Friday took to social media to complain about technical glitches in its net banking and mobile app. Customers of ICICI Direct, the retail broking platform, also faced difficulties and they complained of being unable to access its website or the app.
“Dear Customer, ICICIdirect.com is down at the moment. We are working to get things back to normal as quick as possible and will update you here. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused,’’ it said in a tweet at around 3 pm. Services resumed later with the brokerage saying at 7 pm that the website is working fine and that customers can login to their accounts using any platform.
While there was no official statement from ICICI Bank, sources close to the country’s second largest private sector lender claimed that the outage did not last for long. Earlier, customers had complained since noon that they were unable to access internet banking or use its app. There was no tweet from ICICI Bank Cares, which is the official service handle of the lender, at the time of writing this report.
Such outages are not new to India’s banking or brokerage space. In December 2020, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had imposed restrictions on HDFC Bank due to various instances of glitches. It had barred HDFC Bank from issuing new credit cards and introduce new digital offerings under its `Digital 2.0’ programme. While the restrictions on onboarding new credit card customers was lifted in August last year, recently the banking regulator had allowed HDFC Bank to launch various digital initiatives.
