Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt Ltd India (HMSI) chief Minoru Kato on Wednesday expressed concern over the Niti Ayog’s proposal to switch to electric two-wheelers by 2025.

“We think 2025 is too early for a switchover to electric two-wheelers. We need to find out a proper roadmap and a practical timeline for the switchover,” Kato said at the launch of the BS-VI Activa 125cc scooter in Gurgaon on Wednesday.

He added that the company was in talks with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers on the issue.

HMSI has kicked off its BS-VI transition with the launch of the Activa 125 scooter with a programmed fuel injection engine.

Rival Hero MotoCorp, too, had recently launched its first BS-VI Splendour. The BS-VI Activa 125 will be 10-15 per cent costlier than the BS-IV Activa 125. The company will stop producing the BS-IV Activa 125 for domestic sales once it starts the mass production of the BS-VI model from June 16. However, the company will continue to produce the BS-IV models for exports to the neighbouring countries.

Noriake Abe, managing officer and chief officer (motorcycle operations) at Honda Motor Co Ltd, said: “India is moving too fast ahead. It took 14 years to move from Euro-III to Euro-V and now it is transforming from Euro-IV to Euro-VI in just three years. This is a big change and requires extensive preparation.”
